Ana Mendieta (1948-1985) was a Cuban-American body and performance artist. She also painted, sculpted and created video art. Her work often explored the themes of feminism, life, death, violence, identity and belonging. Nature and connection to the earth was also a major influence in her art. She said “Through my earth/body sculptures, I become one with the earth … I become an extension of nature and nature becomes an extension of my body.” She tragically died too young but left behind a vast trove of art, sculptures as well as documentations of performances.
