Buying into Identity: Collage Workshop on Consumerism

    Feb 10, 2025 ·

Join us on Friday, February 21st from 2-4 pm at the Littman Gallery for a thought-provoking collage workshop presented by artist Sam Marroquin.

As part of our ongoing exhibition, this workshop invites you to explore the complex relationship between identity, social justice, and consumerism.

This workshop will bring us together to reflect on the significance of what we buy and why. We will consider how our purchasing decisions may define our identities, not only on a personal level but on a national and global scale. We will dive into the impact of consumerism: its effects on local communities, the environment, and climate change.

Throughout the session, Sam will lead a collaborative collage process and share some of her methods of piecing together image, text, and found objects. This workshop will give you a chance to visually express the complexities of these themes.

    About the Artist:
Sam Marroquin is a Washington-based visual artist. Working in paint and collage, Marroquin investigates the transmission of news and the how it influences our understanding of reality. In her practice, she builds up layers of images, text, and acrylic paint, producing works that examine the manipulation of information and the blurry line between fact and fiction. Sam's work encourages viewers to consider how the world around them is informed by media, consumerism, and the stories we are told.

Sam’s work is currently on view at the Littman Gallery as part of our ongoing exhibition Not to Be Sold Loose, which includes works by Sam and three other artists. This workshop is a unique opportunity to engage with pressing social issues while learning valuable creative technique from Sam Marroquin. We look forward to seeing you there!

Please note: RSVP is required as limited spots are available. This workshop is open for PSU students, and the general public on a space available basis. This is the first of three workshops this winter, so stay tuned for future offerings!
