    Seeking Warmth: Press Release

    Press Release
Jan 29, 2025 Vancouver, WA USA

Extreme Circumstances Call for Warmth in this Exhibit of International Romani and Local Talent

Seeking Warmth explores humanity's need for emotional and physical warmth, especially during times of extreme circumstances such as those caused by genocide, war, oppression, and neglect.

Ceija Stojka (1933-2013) was a child survivor of the Romani Holocaust (Samudaripen) who began sharing her experiences in written and painted format in 1988 at age 55. She is recognized as a bold activist of Roma, who continue to face persecution today. Sam Marroquin works in collage and paint to expose current and historical trauma within society, emphasizing systems that mask the atrocities against humanity. Daniel Baker examines the role of artistic practice as a form of social agency with a focus on Roma aesthetics.

The exhibit, held at Art at the Cave gallery in Vancouver, WA will include original works by each artist, as well as short video interviews with the artists. Various events and presentations will be available throughout the month, including an opening reception, artist talk, films and presentations regarding media consumption and the Romani Holocaust. Additional workshops designed for middle school students examine the life and creative expression of Cejia Stojka, and can be scheduled through the gallery.

The exhibit is made possible with the assistance of the Ceija Stojka International Association and the Stojka Family Estate.
